the cure to email overload = do what you love
i’ve noticed a major correlation in how email makes me feel and the work that I’m doing. when I’m not particularly fond of the work or it’s something that’s misaligned with my values&beliefs, email makes me feel tired and overwhelmed. I’m really, really bad at doing things that feel wrong to me; in fact, I’ll completely avoid them as long as possible (which is why the ad/agency world did not work well for me).
the more I love what I’m doing and the more I find & work only with people who share common beliefs and values, the more I enjoy email. I now get really excited to check email because I’m working only on things I adore and feel passionate about. as Dave Brown would say, I’m loving my work and working my love.
along the same lines, my “business big brother” recently advised me to monitor how potential new projects, partners and opportunities make me feel for a few days before making a decision. he said to monitor how the different work I was doing made me feel as that would provide critical insight into what is right for me. that’s some of the best business advice I’ve ever received.
