What you taught me about @Foursquare, @Tumblr, love at first sight and Mark Zuckerberg in 5 days
Five days ago, I put an Urtak on my blog to learn more about you and what you care about. More than 1000 responses later, I spent some time today analyzing the results.
Those who read my blog…
- are more likely to have a Tumblr and most likely use Foursquare
- Half of you work for a tech start-up and start-up workers tend to be more upset with Obama
- You like Facebook but wouldn’t share your business concept with Mark Zuckerberg
- You’re happy and living life with passion
- You enjoy inspirational quotes and think inspirational stories give you the confidence to act on your ambitions
- You’re probably in a relationship and most likely believe in love at first sight
Those who use Foursquare…
- Like 4sq more than Gowalla
- Are likely to watch tv, prefer fiction over non-fiction, don’t usually comment on blogs and enjoy inspirational quotes
- You are most likely in a relationship, more likely to have had your heart broken by a Facebook status update and less likely to believe in love at first sight
- You’re much less likely to like Facebook and much more likely to use Tumblr
Those who have a Tumblr…
- prefer Tumblr over Twitter, Foursquare over Gowalla and non-fiction over fiction
- You’re much more likely to play a musical instrument and inspirational stories put you in a good mood
- You’re most likely in a relationship and less likely to believe in love at first sight
Whew! That’s a lot of information. It’s definitely fun to play around with analyzing the results but I’d love to see Urtak graphically package this information in a compelling way. Tumblr does a great job of this.
One thing, however, that really differentiates Urtak in my mind is that transparency is one of their guiding principles. If you participate and answer questions, they think you deserve to see and analyze the results too.
Participate in the Urtak, check out the results… what interesting insight were you able to contrive?
pure awesomeness.
A few weeks back, a bunch of crazy kids down in Tampa had this idea to claim April 16th (TOMORROW!) as Foursquare Day. Being nerds ourselves we couldn’t resist the math nerdiness of it: 4 squared = 16. 4/16. Get it? Foursquare Day? Ha!
We’ve gotten word that there are 150+ foursquare day parties behind held around the world… from Boston to San Francisco to Santiago, Chile to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Check out the list to see if your city is having a Foursquare Day party (or view them all on a map!) Or, sign up to host your own Foursquare Day party.
And yes, we realize that this is absolutely crazy - 150 cities throwing Foursquare Day parties is nuts! But we love it… and that’s why you’re all invited to our throwdown in NYC…
Friday April 16, 10pm -> 2am
The Hotel on Rivington - Penthouse
107 Rivington Street (btw Ludlow and Essex)
Lower East Side, NYCSponsored by Pepsi with Atlantic Records & Don Q.
Hip hop dance party provided by DJ Manero. We hope to see a bunch of you there. And special thanks to everyone around the world (!!) who’s making this happen (read the back story here). Seriously, what’s happening to foursquare now is kind of amazing and we’re completely humbled by how supportive our user community is. So, thank you :)
ps: And, yes, of course there’s a badge :)
and then my mom started pimping @foursquare… LOVE.
#amazing
(my next lesson for mom: get her tumblr up and kickin.)
congrats foursquare team!!! i heart you.
dear awesome restaurant I eat at or bar I drink at or place I go & spend money,
your life is about to change thanks to foursquare. soon, your opportunity to make A LOT more money will be standing before you. please take advantage.
how? you’ll have access to a range of information and statistics about your biggest fans:
- who visits your restaurant
- how often they visit
- how they share online
- and more!
foursquare is making it REALLY easy for you to meaningfully connect with your customers, drive word of mouth and increase sales.
a few use-cases:
- encourage foot traffic with special events and discounts (e.g. free appetizer for groups of 4 or more; free drink to the mayor; free drink for every friend you refer; check-in on Tues between 8 and 9, get a complimentary appetizer…)
- get feedback and insight on service, menu, etc. via tips people leave (reach out to negative, offer something nice; reach out to positive, say thank you)
- use the web - if your fans tweet and use facebook, join and jump in the conversation (if you aren’t already)… this is another vehicle for sharing news, incentivizing and driving word-of-mouth.
- get to know your fans - most importantly, people like to feel apart of something. get to know names and faces!

a text today made me really realize the power of game dynamics in consumer apps (and specifically foursquare). the text read: “be forewarned. i’m going to take the mayorship from you.” haha, is that a threat? :)
foursquare = the next gen of city and campus guides.
harvard + fourquare collaboration = f’ing brilliant.
i LOVE this collaboration. it proves the value and potential of location-based technologies like fourquare.
personally, i’m an avid foursquare user. i love it. it’s my little black book of friends. and while knowing the ongoing whereabouts of my friends as well as their location of choice for nighttime debauchery is good and well, applications like this take the cake!
i think having a school with Harvard’s credibility not only puts foursquare in a great spot (from a new biz/distribution strategy perspective) but more importantly (in my mind), it sets a great precedence for all universities. hey schools - now is the time to rethink your communications (and recruitment) strategies!
yay to smart technologies with thoughtful applications!
i want to see this more for @foursquare.
This week (starting last night, thru Sunday Dec 3 @ 11:59p), every point added to the foursquare leaderboard will be lead to Pepsi donating $0.04 to CampInteractive, an organization that helps empower inner-city youth through technology skills and mentoring.
We are *super excited* about this, not just because this is a great way to tie foursquare points into something in the real world, but *just like that* we’re about to raise about $10,000 for a great organization (btw, we capped the donation at 10,000 points / $10,000 as things can tend to get out of hand with foursquare :)
A quick round of thanks to our leadererboard sponsor Pepsi and to Adam Gillman & Simon Kirk at Techies Give Back (these two made it all happen!)
Very smart (I wanted to buy this ad, and wasn’t able to make it work - curses :)). Good job Pepsi et al.
i love this!
